Chapter 13

“It will be dark soon. I think I’m going to head inside,” I told Sam and Ty.

Sam squeezed Ty’s upper arm. “Raincheck?”

He gave her a pout that was laughable, considering his massive size.

She patted his chest. “Chicks before dicks, babe. Sorry.”

Asher came up beside us. “How’s your head, Sam?”

“Fine-ish. Super strange the pain has gone away. It must be some bug. Riley’s head has been hurting like that off and on.”

He swiveled his eyes to me. Then he gave Sam a smile. “Go roast marshmallows while you’re feeling better. I’ll watch out for Riley.”

Sam beamed. “Yay! That’d be awesome, if that’s okay with you, Re-Re?” She only used my childhood nickname when she really wanted something.

I sighed. “I don’t need anyone watching out for me. I’ll be completely fine. I think I’ll go chill in the house and listen to some music.”

“Are you sure?” Sam asked.

“Positive.”

With a sassy wink, she grabbed Ty’s hand and pulled him back toward the party.

A drunken Easton came galloping over to me. “Hey, we are all going to play a game of hide-and-seek. Are you in?”

Bianca came up behind him and stood so close to Easton that I was surprised he didn’t feel the heat of her body, but that was just what Bianca did—she lurked. She was the one percent that Lysol couldn’t kill.

She matched my glare with a smirk. “Of course she doesn’t want to play.”

“Well, I did exit kindergarten years ago, so there is that.”

Easton grabbed my hands. “Come on, Ry. You are terrified of the dark, and soon, we will be stuck in the house. The way everything is, we need to soak in every minute of sunshine. It’s our freedom, Ry. Live a little!”

Bianca smirked at me, and I bristled on the inside. I was pissed that Easton would share something with her that not only did I consider a weakness, but I was sure pleased her to hear.

My voice was miraculously level as I said, “There is only a few minutes or so until it’s dark. I think we’ve had a full day, and I want to head inside.”

Bianca murmured something under her breath about me that I couldn’t hear but caused Easton to frown at her.

“There are only ten of us. It’ll go by quick,” Easton begged.

I had made my mom a promise, but Easton knew how terrified I was of the dark.

Annoyance built up inside of me. “Easton, if you want to go, I fully support you, but I made my mom a promise. I’m going inside. You do you.” Smiling to mask my anger, I said, “You go ahead. I’ll save you some hot cocoa.”

He groaned but gave me a nod before the group jogged past the open field and toward the spruce trees, leaving me and Asher standing there.

I looked over at him. His face was blank, but I knew what he was thinking behind those piercing green eyes. His hands were in his back pockets, and his silence spoke volumes.

“Are you heading out?” I asked.
